The otter from Wind in the Willows is a salt-of-the-earth type character.
For me, the best chapter in the book is The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. In it, Otter's son Portly, goes missing and the animals fear that this time something horrible has happened to him. They suspect that he may have been killed at the weir. Otter is beside himself and, unable to sleep, Ratty and Mole go off in search of Portly.
What happens next is one of the most astonishingly wonderful passages in all of literature.
