The Piper at the Gates of Dawn. My favourite chapter from Wind in the Willows. Possibly my favourite ever chapter of any book. Otter's little son, Portly, is lost and on a midsummer night Ratty and Mole go searching for him. They find him eventually, safe on an enchanted isle, at the feet of the benevolent God of the countryside, Pan, the friend and helper. It is the most magical of encounters and still holds its power every time I read it. My image, despite Pan's less than reverential resemblance to Elvis, is a heartfelt homage to a powerful and moving piece of writing.
